Moore Mountain in Depth
|
Launch:
|
The launch is a grassy portion of an apple orchard which is three gliders wide with
plenty of parking in the back. The launch has a mellow slope from horizontal to vertical and
top landing is possible.

Landing:
|
Straight out from launch, but a long glide. If you go much below launch,
it is time to head to the LZ.

General info:
|
This is one of the premier flying sites in the southeastern US and is the home site of
Southern Skies. You must be a member of the
buzzard club to fly and
yearly dues are $35. Southern Skies takes students on their first high mountain
flights from here, so watch for novice pilots. A P3 rating is required to fly the site. P2 flights
must be supervised by P3 or better.
This site is known for nice glass-offs in the evening. There is some thermal flying but
the site is best known for its ridge soaring. The ridge is about 2 miles long. There is a bowl
to the right of launch. Be careful not to get too far back in the bowl in high winds.
If the soaring is good, you can cross the bowl to get to the southwest end of the ridge. There is
a spine to the left of launch - turn before you get there.
There is a yearly in the spring (Memorial weekend in 2004) and
usually a fun fly in the fall.
